-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-  The 60-second Detail…..! -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-

LIANE CARROLL
After an amazing summer of gigs from Brecon to Norway, Liane is embarking on a Scottish Tour with Scotland’s finest virtuoso jazz pianist Brian Kellock. Already hailed in the press as “British jazz’s finest ever double act”, the Tour will yield a joint album to be recorded live at The Blue Lamp, Aberdeen and released in 2009 on Splash Point Records, produced by Neal Richardson.
STOP PRESS! Liane is also appearing at Ronnie Scott’s this week (6-8 Oct);
Her vocal trio group “The Passion” finally released their long-awaited album in the summer, with Jacqui Dankworth and Sara Colman.
“Slow Down”, Liane’s current CD launched in September ‘07, is the fastest-selling Liane CD ever released and is already on its 2nd pressing!
In the meantime the gorgeous DVD “Liane Live” (launched Feb 2008) has been very well received worldwide, underlining Liane’s status as “Jazz Musician of the Year 2008″ as voted in the APPJAG Awards.

SUE RICHARDSON
Sue seems to have hit the ground running since returning to gigs post-maternity leave. First there was her standing-room-only gig as part of the Albert Hall’s Ignite series; then playing on Ian Shaw’s version of Humphrey Lyttelton’s “Sad Sweet Song”;
As a result, Sue was invited by Humph’s band to join them for a big Tribute gig in Swansea last Sunday (5/10/08), compered by Radio 4’s Brian Perkins . This was a huge honour for Sue, and the capacity-crowd concert was a delightful, respectful celebration of Humph’s music :-)  Sue has been booked to join the band again at a concert at the Bull’s Head in Barnes (Date TBC).
STOP PRESS!  Sue will be signing copies TODAY 7/10/08 of her groundbreaking album “Emergence” at Ray’s Jazz (Foyles) in London, and playing a short set with her Trio before jetting off to play in Holland, and her Quintet will be playing London’s Spice of Life on 12/11/08.
Having played at last year’s London Jazz Festival, Sue has been booked again for this year’s, appearing at the City Inn on 20/11/08 (John Islip Street, Westminster); She is also one of the stars in the Old New Borrowed Blue show in the Festival.

OLD NEW BORROWED BLUE
Starring Ian Shaw, Sue Richardson, Tammy Weis and Nicola Emmanuelle (all signed to Splash Point Publishing), a brand new Song show written + presented jointly by pianists Neal Richardson and Alex Webb. In conjunction with Serious, the show will be presented at the Floral Hall (Royal Opera House) 16/11/08,  and Blackheath Concert Halls 21/11/08.   Along the lines of Norman Granz’s legendary “Jazz at the Philharmonic” Tours, this is a great chance to see a whole smorgasbord of performers in one place at one time, with the songs forming a narrative along the theme of Old New Borrowed Blue(s)!

IAN SHAW:  “HUMPH” TRIBUTE SINGLE
Yep it’s true, Splash Point Records will release its first download-only single at November’s London Jazz Festival. It’s a beautiful melancholy ballad written by Humph called “Sad Sweet Song”, that the late great man had specifically asked Ian to record… Ian recorded the song at Splash Point studios, and invited Sue Richardson to play trumpet on it in tribute to Humph. As a result it was performed at the BBC Jazz Awards in July, and the recording prompted Humph’s band to invite Sue to gig with them.
The single will be launched at the Old, New, Borrowed, Blue Show and it’ll be available on all providers worldwide (iTunes etc.) from 21st Nov. - please look out for it!  We’re also delighted that Ian is now signed to Splash Point Publishing - listen to his beautiful current album “Lifejacket” on www.IanShaw.biz  The album includes the stunning duet with Liane Carroll “42″ - which we think should be a number 1!

SPLASH POINT PUBLISHING
… celebrates signing its 20th writer!  We are becoming known as the de facto Publisher for the cream of British Jazz writers/performers, including Liane Carroll, Ian Shaw, Sue Richardson, Andy Drudy, John Donaldson, Tammy Weis,  David Hentschel, Clement Regert (album out 13/10/08), Alex Webb, Nicola Emmanuelle, David Preston, David Gordon, Arden Hart, Jamie Salisbury…. ;  PRS, gig and overseas royalties are being successfully chased worldwide, with licensing deals placing music from Japan to Hollywood; and even up in the skies on in-flight entertainment channels!

NEAL RICHARDSON
As well as being the “he to whom the mud sticks” of Splash Point Music Ltd, and being Sue’s pianist, Neal has been doing his usual series of Quartet gigs - not least at this year’s Finals for the Lawn Tennis Association - and played at Westminster for a dinner with speaker Nick Clegg;   Neal presented another month of his weekly jazz radio show “live” on SeahavenFM.com during it’s summer broadcast… among his guests was Radio 3 Jazz Line-up reviewer Phil Jackson;  Neal’s Quartet have been booked to play for HM The Queen in 2010!  You can catch his duo live every Tuesday at Food For Friends in Brighton.  And yes, new addition little Oscar was named after Messrs Peterson, Hammerstein and Wilde :-)
As ever, all our products can be ordered direct from us at www.splashpointrecords.com or your favourite record shop.  Thanks for reading (and listening)…. without you it’d be a bit of a lonely job!

Hope to see you at some of those gigs - come and say “hi”, tell your friends, buy a CD/DVD, bring a pineapple… :-)

Best Regards

Harry Happel, jazzpianist

October 7th, 2008

Harry Happel, jazzpianist

The Dutch jazz trio Intrioduction was set up in 1976 by leader Harry Happel, a fantastic self taught piano player. Intrioduction got to the top in a short period of time after they had been on television and had played a lot of live jazz in the famous Dutch radio jazz program “Sesjun”. After these performances, the media described Intrioduction in terms such as: “exceptional class”, “professional” and “swinging”. They felt honoured, after having played on the 1000th 100th, 250th and 500th broadcasting anniversary of the program.

In 1989, Intrioduction gave some concerts in the world-famous large hall of the “Concertgebouw” in Amsterdam and in the Rotterdam concert hall “de Doelen”. Intrioduction played several times at the North Sea Jazz Festival and over the years they performed at venues / festivals in the UK, Belgium Germany, Japan, Switzerland, Finland, France, spain and Singapore. Female guest singers: Dee Daniels (live radio show) and Yvonne Walter.

The musical style of Intrioduction is mainstream and has been influenced by musicians like Monty Alexander, Oscar Peterson, Gene Harris etc.

Recordings: 11 CD’s including:
* Challenge Records, from the piano series Jazz at the Pinehill (PH CHR 75083).
* Latest CD “Generations” together with Frits Landesbergen on drums.

With Harry Happel at the piano together with his talented musicians you can be sure to experience a high level concert  with a dynamic swing and refreshing improvisations.
The music of Intrioduction is fascinating, powerful, dynamic, and it swings like hell…!

Jive Aces Events

August 23rd, 2008

Festivals
The Jive Aces have been storming across Europe performing at dozens of festivals this Summer (with several still to go!) including Glastonbury for the first time, an sensational fifth year at Montreux Jazz and a packed main stage gig at the Innocent Village Fete. Check out some of the pics on the right. I’ll be putting together a slide show when the season is finished of all the crazy action so watch this space.
Stories From The Golden Age
You may have been wondering what all that nonsense was earlier in the year when we sent out pictures of the band dressed as pirates. Well, the reason is, even though we are still about to release the new album, “Recipe For Rhythm”, we have actually recorded another album based on 1930’s and 40’s pulp fiction stories. The album, called “Amazing Adventures” will be released in the US first and then the UK but we are releasing the first two songs as a single on iTunes and other download sites in the in the iTunes USA store in September.
Mini USA Tour
In September we’ll be returning to the USA for a couple of weeks taking in some places we have been recently such as LA, Phoenix, DC, San Diego and Sacramento but also some places we have not been to for some time including San Francisco, Philadelphia and New York City. Check the schedule below for the dates and forward them on to anyone you know in those cities.
Summertime Swing
Summertime Swing was a massive success with over 1200 people packing Saint Hill Manor terrace and gardens. All our guests were amazing the legendary Keely Smith, the fabulous Kenny Ball, Craig Douglas, Toni Elizabeth Prima, Keith Ball, Crazy Jay, Andy Cooper, the Hollywood Hoppers and DJ Terry Elliot’s Sentimental Journey (who’s been with us since the first year).
Stop Press!
The band is now mid a four week non-stop run of shows, mainly festivals, around Europe. Firstly the Sildajazz Festival in Norway (where the band went straight after Summertime Swing) by popular demand for 4 nights at the festival’s top venue for the sixth year running, as well a special show at the football stadium. Then it was straight to Edinburgh for the Fringe where we played 3 days at the “City” Club, with some great reviews and a fourth night added due to ticket demand. Then down to Bridlington at the beautifully rennovated Spa before jetting back to Italy for a show to 4000 people at the Summer Jamboree festival in Senagalia, Italy. And this weekend it’s Twinwood Festival and Big River Blues & Jazz in Belfast!
Blogs

with some interesting stories and pics so check it out HERE.
Facebook
If you are on Facebook, you can keep up with the band in a couple of ways, we have both a Facebook Group and secondly we have a Facebook Page where you can become a “fan”. Click on the above links to join both, go on you know you want to!
Here are a few choice pics from Summertime Swing but check out the online gallery for more by clicking HERE. There are still more to come in so check back soon.

Victor Prieto. “A fiendishly skilled accordionist and composer” ….”An effervescent improviser”….”A dynamic jazz accordionist”
The New York Times (Chinen)
Victor Prieto now makes a most compelling case for the accordion as a primary jazz instrument on Persistencia. Yet this is not just a showcase of just Prieto’s brilliance, but also a view of an extremely taut trio with two other fine musicians.
All About Jazz By Mark F. Turner

Prieto has raised the bar on what is possible on the accordion. His intensity and delight penetrate all barriers.
The New York Post

Prieto plays accordion the way Toots Thielmans plays harmonica or Dino Saluzzi plays bandoneon. He transcends the instrument and just plays music. The key features of Prieto’s music are lyricism and drama. He writes fine, memorable melodies, then works with the band to create tracks with a very clear dramatic arch, sometimes more than one, engaging and carrying the listener forward… He tells stories and paints pictures with music

“Audiofeeling”

This album was recorded at Polish Public Radio’s studio in Olsztyn. The recording engineer was Ryszard Szmit, and the piano was taken care of by Marek Buczniewicz, who also prepares instruments for Keith Jarrett, among others. “Audiofeeling” includes 10 compositions by Kaczmarczyk, comprising an overview of his musical interests and fascinations.
While it’s not the most accessible or ‘easy’ music, being of a somewhat different nature than the ’smooth jazz’ now in vogue, it conveys the true face of jazz as an improvised art. At the recording sessions, the musicians (Pawel Kaczmarczyk - piano, Michal Baranski - bass, Pawel Dobrowolski - drums, Grzegorz Piotrowski, Tomasz Grzegorski and Radek Nowicki - saxophones) didn’t play any written-out parts, but played ‘live’, creating the final shape of each piece as it happened.
In a sense, this is a recording of a concert. The album was pressed on a gold CD storage medium. This gives the disc a lifetime several times longer than that of aluminum-based CDs, as well as slightly better sound quality.

Sound Quality

Realisation of the best possible quality is a priority for ARMS. Prior to being sent for pressing, all recordings are listened to on dozens of various hi-fi systems, in an effort to make it possible to obtain optimal sound quality in a home listening environment. ARMS releases have won high praise in the  audiophile community. A recent album - “Sin” - has been recognised as being of reference quality for the testing of home as well as studio audio systems. Others - for example Leszek Mozdzer’s “Piano” and Piotr Zaczek’s “Mutru” - have also drawn favorable opinions on the phonographic market.
From an audiophile perspective, “Audiofeeling” isn’t particularly enthralling upon its initial listening, due to the fact that the aspects of the overall sound which were focused on in the course of its creation were not the ambience, effective bass and a broad spectrum of overtones one expects from a recording of this quality. Here, the point was to recreate the raw sound of the band.

Kaczmarczyk’s records have been also noticed as remarkable productions:

- Pawel Kaczmarczyk “Audiofeeling” feat. M.Baranski, P.Dobrowolski, R.Nowicki, T.Grzegorski, G.Piotrowski - was voted in the JAZZ FORUM (The European Jazz Magazine) Album of the Year (2007)

- Kaczmarczyk/Baranski/Dobrowolski  Jazz Trio received Polish Public Television Channel 2’s “Album of The Year 2005″ award for the CD “Live!”

Pawel Kaczmarczyk

One of Poland’s pre-eminent jazz pianists from the younger generation, a student of the Karol Szymanowki Academy of Music’s Jazz Studies program in Katowice, composer, soloist and sideman. He performs with the Janusz Muniak Quartet, New Bone, and the Rafal Sarnecki Quintet, as well as leading his own trio. Pawel Kaczmarczyk has received many awards at various festivals and competitions: a special distinction at the 2002 edition of the Polish National Review of Jazz and Blues Groups in Gdynia, where he returned to take top honors in 2003; the title of Best Instrumentalist at Poland’s Jazz Juniors competition in 2002 an award for the best arrangement at the International Competition for Jazz Groups “JUNIOR JAZZ 2006″, in Usti nad Labem (Czech Republic), as well as first place in the “New Hope” category of Jazz Forum Magazine’s “Jazz Top” readers’ poll from 2004 through 2007. The year 2006 also saw him being awarded a grant from the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. Pawel Kaczmarczyk is a winner of the “Melomani” Jazz Society’s Jazz Oscars Grand Prix in the “Hope of the Melomani” category for 2005.

In 2001 Pawel Kaczmarczyk established a trio with Michal Baranski on bass, and Pawel Dobrowolski on drums. The group draws its inspiration from the work of artists like Herbie Hancock and Bill Evans; the concepts of Brada Mehldau and Wayne Shorter form part of their musical vocabulary as well. It’s music that is full of warmth and sensitivity, but with no lack of electrifying dynamics and avant-garde ideas. The trio won first place at the 26th “Jazz Juniors” International Competition for Young and Debuting Jazz Groups (2002), took the “Grand Prix” at the 40th “Jazz on the Oder” Jazz Festival in Wroclaw (2002), and was awarded the “Key to a Career” prize at the “Pomeranian Jazz Autumn” festival, as well as winning the 2nd Place “Golden Crocus” award at the Jelenia Gora Jazz Festival, several medals at the “Kultursalen Horbiger” competition in Vienna (2004), and 1st Place at the “JUNIOR JAZZ 2006″ International Competition for Jazz Groups in Usti nad Labem (Czech Republic).

Pawel Kaczmarczyk has performed at a large number jazz festivals, including 28.Leverkusener Jazztage (Leverkusen-Germany), Gulf Jazz Festival (Kuwait), Gulf Jazz Nights (Dubai - United Arab Emirates), Goerlitz Jazztage (Goerlitz-Germany), 12.International Festival of Jazz Piano (Prague-Czech Republic), Warsaw Summer Jazz Days, Jazz en Nord (Lille-France), Jazzy Colors Festiwal (Paris-France), Krakow’s “Zaduszki Jazzowe In Chicago” (USA) and “Piwnica pod Baranami” Summer Festival, the Palatia Jazz Festival (Dirmstein-Germany), Prishtina Jazz Festival (Kosova), the Lamantin Jazz Festival (Szombathely-Hungary), the International Jazz Pianists’ Festival in Kalisz, Lotos Jazz Festival – Bielska Zadymka Jazzowa, and many others… He also performs regularly in Poland’s (Tygmont, U Muniaka, Blue Note) and German’s finest jazz clubs.

In 2005, the KBD Trio recorded their debut album “Live!”, which they are currently promoting through concerts in Poland and abroad. Pawel Kaczmarczyk has worked with a wide range of musicians, including Janusz Muniak, Adam Pieronczyk, Zbigniew Namyslowski, Roman “Gucio” Dylag, Bronislaw Suchanek, Janusz Stefanski, Pawel Jarzebski, Adam Kawonczyk, Jorgos Skolias, Monty Waters, Kazimierz Jonkisz, Artur Rojek (Myslovitz), Krzysztof Popek, Cezary Konrad, Tomasz Szukalski, Zbigniew Wegehaupt, Maciej Strzelczyk, Isham Rusty Jones, Grzech Piotrowski, Zach Brock, Brad Terry, Rafal Sarnecki, Aga Zaryan, Emil Kowalski, Lukasz Zyta, Maciej Adamczak, Adam Kowalewski, Jerzy Malek, Wojciech Pulcyn, Marcin Slusarczyk, Piotr Baron, Michal Baranski, Krzysztof Dziedzic, Pawel Dobrowolski, Radek Nowicki, Tomasz Grzegorski, Marek Balata, Adam Baldych and many others.

The magazine “Jazz Forum” conducts a yearly readers’ poll known as “Jazz Top”, which is a ranking of Poland’s jazz musicians and, in a sense, an overview of the country’s jazz scene. Earlier this year, the poll results for 2007 were published and Pawel Kaczmarczyk placed highly in the Pianist of The Year category (2th, behind Leszek Mozdzer), as well as winning recognition as a Composer, Leader of an Acoustic Group (3rd, behind Tomasz Stanko Quartet and Simple Acoustic Trio), and Musician of The Year. What seems most significant, however, is that for the fourth year in a row he was at the top of the “The New Hope Of Polish Jazz” category.
