Now over 150 Jazz playlists ….. http://jazzbreak2.blogspot.com/
We are putting together a new series of playlists called “Jazz Women“.
As in all of our playlists there will be “well known” artists along with some
“not so well known” artists. If you are one of the “not so well knowns”, or if you
know of any, please reply to this e-mail. Send us the name, web page and/or
MySpace address of the artist and we will do our best to include them.
Just so the guys don’t feel left out, we still need lots more”not so well known”
artists in all catagories (piano, sax, smooth, etc) to keep our playlists interesting.

Do you have a CD you would like to let people know about?  Would you like

Williams Cumberbache
Caracas-born and London-based percussionist and composer Williams Cumberbache has been one of the key figures in the UK Latin Music scene for many years. His expressive style combines Afro-Caribbean traditions with modern, urban innovations. In his music you can hear a mix of Salsa, Descarga, Jazz, Hip-Hop and Rap, particularly with his own band, TUMBAITO, which he formed in 1994. Tumbaito made its debut with an album Otros Tiempos in 1997. This was regarded by Charlie Gillet, BBC Radio DJ and Broadcaster, as one of the Top 20 albums of the year, earning excellent reviews and radio airplay over Europe.

Apart from playing and touring with his own band he has spent the last three years working as a recording artist for the West London music “Massive” with DJ’s and producers Kirk D’Giorgio, Goldie, Phil Asher and Nathan Haines, Mark d´Clive Lowe, Chris Liberator, Frankie Valentine and many others. He has recorded on 30 albums with a variety of artists also holding club nights at prestigious and respected clubs around London like: Notting Hill Arts Club,93 Feet East, Bar Cuba in kensington and others.  During this intense period he was working as one of the key figures on both the Latin and West London scene. This has led to his latest creation “Malandro Sound UK” 2008 featuring the voices of Hugo Chavez, Che Guevara plus others.

He has recorded as a guest artist with GRAMMY award winner producers Nick Gold (World Circuit records) and Juan d´ Marcos Gonzales (Sierra Maestra, Afro-Cuban All Stars, Buena Vista Social Club) for Sierra Maestra album  “Dundunbanza” in which he recorded congas and bata drums. He also recorded for the Senegalese star Cheikh Lo album “Bambay Gueej” produced by GRAMMY award winner Yousou N´ Dour with music arrenged by legendary PEE WEE ELLIS (ex music director for the James Brown band) and has played TV shows with famous rock band “The Cure”, Carleen Anderson, Bob Brozman (USA), and recorded percussion for the film BELOVED with music written by OSCAR award winner Rachel Portman  (EMMA, The Joy Luck Club) and which featured music from Mailian singer Oumou Sangare

Before Williams moved to London he played lead percussion in Venezuela with highly respected ensambles of Afro-Venezuelan musicians, like his home town band grupo folklorico “AUTOCTONO” de La Vega, where he started at an early age to learn his beloved “African-Venezuelan  music” as he calls it. Apart from Autoctono he also played with grupo “Madera” and “Vasallos del Sol” for whom he did research and field recordings for the Biggott Fundation of traditional Venezuelan music, both groups of of international recognition.

Heather McClell
After causing a stir in Sao Paulo with her rich and distinct voice Heather returns to her home shores in the UK to showcase material from her debut album, recorded in collaboration with some of Brazil’s leading musicians.

The album was recorded in collaboration with some of Brazil’s leading musicians including, Pupilo (Nação Zumbi), Simone Soul (Os Mutantes), Serginho Machado (Céu), Alfredo Bello (Otto), and Junio Barreto. The result is a delicate combination of rhythms and musical styles, which include Jazz, Electro-acoustic Folk, and Bossa Nova. The fusion is something that Heather sustains with her London based band, which ranges from leading musicians on the Brazilian scene in London to up and coming British instrumentalists.

Sonido Callejero featuring MC Magico

If you don’t know yet it’s about time you heard…SONIDO CALLEJERO “Sounds of the Street” is MC Magico’s latest project for 2008 and as usual he will not disappoint. Bringing and array of colourful sounds to your ears mixing traditional Latin music with the new sounds of Reggaeton and Hip Hop MC Magico together with Cuban MC Floiran and DJ Snatch give you some Hard Core Latin “Sabor” that will have your booty shakin all night long!!!

MC Magico
Born and raised in Cali, Colombia MC Magico has been causing a storm on the UK Latin music scene in the last few years. He represents the multicultural diversity of the UK and the new sound of Latin music fusing music from his homeland with the influences of the UK urban music scene as well as other musical styles including Latin Jazz, Salsa, Batchata, Reggaeton, Bashment, Hip-Hop and Ballads, and has worked alongside some of the best musicians in the UK including Alex Wilson.

¿Puedo Hablar?
Documenting the Venezuelan revolution: Hugo Chavez, His supporters, and his detractors.

The team at Sol Productions in Venezuela Inc. spent just under three months in Venezuela filming “¿Puedo Hablar? / May I Speak?”, following both candidates as they raced towards the December 3rd elections.   The film offers its audience a snapshot portrait of a Venezuelan society at a crossroads; a re-elected president, challenged by a reformed and mounting opposition; a valuable starting block for any debate on current Venezuelan politics.   The production team of four journeyed to six different regions of Venezuela, shooting everywhere from the notorious barrios of Caracas to the oil-rich Lake Maracaibo, from a city of five million to an Amazonian pueblo of twenty-three, criss-crossing the country in everything from Chavista motocicletas to dug-out canoes and a private jet.

Over 150 Jazz Playlists
http://jazzbreak2.blogspot.com/
The thing about our Jazz Playlists is that they don’t just
contain “the usual suspects”.Oh sure, we have Miles and
Trane and Ella and Zoot. But, we also have Bill (Anshell)
and Mark (Morganelli) and Fern (Lindzon) and Jon (Raney).
You may not know much about the second group and that’s
the whole idea. We find GREAT jazz artists that haven’t been
found yet and add them to our lists. Jazz in not just about listening
to the same people over and over again. It’s the kick of finding a
new artist and telling someone about them. That’s how we have
our fun …..
We also enjoy finding “jazz blogs” If you are a musician, critic or
fan with a blog or if you have a favorite blog let us know about it.
We plan to feature a different blog each week and compile a list
and post it on our site. Just reply to this e-mail with your picks.

We will run your “2 Liner” like the ones below ……
THE NEURONS    …. Brilliant jazz quartet and World  groove
http://www.pauladams.org/theneurons
David Hoffman  …  Ray Charles masterful Trumpet  Soloist
http://www.Davidhoffmanjazz.com

If you have a jazz website, MySpace page, CD Baby page,

thousands of people who are interested in the music you
can do it with a “2 Liner” in our jazzbreak Update Mailer.

Live Music Events London

Thursday, May 8th, 2008

Hi to all.  The Good Ship has invested no little cash in PA equipment and speakers in April and throughout May and June we will be treating the old vessel acoustically as we try and attain the best sound possible from the pit.  As ever we have a huge range of bands this month and my main tips for the month are as below.

If you would like any industry guest list tickets for any event then please get in touch.  Full contact details are at the bottom.

My main tips for the month are…
Soft Toy Emergency on the 2nd The first of 3 hotly tipped bands from Liverpool at The Good Ship this month, these are the most untraditional with their manic, electro disco.
The Helmholtz Resonators on the 8th Newly formed indie supergroup side project.  Fantastic, industrial, robotic TIm Burton soundtracks performed with gusto and no little glee.
Polka Party on the 15th You really can hear all their influences in their high octane indie.  A touch of The Young Knives and Interpol but with a liberal dousing of Ladytron Venue.
Evi Vine on the 22nd “Evi Vine live experience is one of enchantment and dark beauty, with audiences often moved to tears at the sense of depth, involvement and understanding in her work.”
The Beehives on the 24th Huge in Liverpool, The Beehives should have a great chance of making an impression here with their cute feel good pop and the unmistakable vocals of frontman Thomas

The Good Ship is also available for private functions, single or video launches (we have a cinema size screen) and whatever other excuse people need.  We are always interested in speaking with promoters who want to put on interesting acts and we open til 2am during the week and 4am during the weekend.  Please ask sooner rather than later though as dates go quickly.

26 nights of music, 4 of comedy.  Full live music list for the month…

Once again Paul Hawkins & Thee Awkward Silences put on a fantastic bill of the very best and most unique bands they can possibly find.  This month we present:
Extradition Order www.myspace.com/extraditionorder Edwardian Blues-punk urchin brilliance from the homemade gas can guitar toting trio.  Like a more eccentric and less socially-adjusted version of the White Stripes, they release their new single “Penetrate” very very soon…
Paul Hawkins & Thee Awkward Silences www.myspace.com/theeawkwardsilences This gig marks the release of the raw, powerful Stooges-Meets-Smths new single “I Believe in Karma” and the band will celebrate with a performance with their usual flamboyance, style and catchy songs welded towards their new darker synth-driven direction.  It’s been described as Prince-meets-Daniel-Johnston and that’s as high a praise as you can hope for!
Albino www.myspace.com/therealalbino Albino’s drunken misanthropic country-folk heartbreak songs are a perennial Silent Night favourite and, having just released 3rd album “Resurrection Bodies” they’re back and stronger than ever…
Mucky Little Paw Prints www.myspace.com/muckylittlepawprints One of the best new bands Paul’s heard in sometime, Mucky Little Paw Prints are a 4 piece surrey-based folk 4-piece promising to “melt hearts and raise smiles with irresistable sea shanty pop bursting with boy/girl harmonies and spring time romance”.
Niall Spooner-Harvey www.myspace.com/niallspoonerharvey Silent Night’s resident poet offers his brilliant surreal odes to confusion in modern living.  Compelling, heartwarming and absolutely excellent…
