MASTER PIANIST ELEW
COMES TO BUSH HALL WITH VIRTUOSIC NEW BAND

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
An innovator and musical revolutionary, master pianist ELEW is re-inventing modern music—one key at a time. Pioneering a genre that fuses classic jazz with modern pop and rock, ELEW’s masterful arrangements and blistering re-interpretations have now ignited interest across the globe. Along with his new band, ELEW has created a thunderous new sound he calls Rockjazz, recalling John Coltrane’s 1960s recreations of the contemporaneous popular music—and this summer he’s bringing his soul-shattering live show for the first time to celebrated music venue Bush Hall in London.

About ELEW
ELEW has toured the world, recorded, and performed continuously with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Elvin Jones, Roy Hargrove, and Cassandra Wilson, among others. He won the 1999 Thelonious Monk International Piano Competition, his mesmerizing piano theatrics even then hinting at the new paradigm that he would one day call Rockjazz. Since then, everything has been a blur. ELEW has been asked to perform at a veritable whirlwind of high profile events, including the TED Conference, the 2009 Donna Karan Fall Runway Show, an exclusive pre-Oscar party attended by Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Oprah Winfrey and Hugh Jackman, and an ultra-exclusive benefit for the Contemporary Art Fund at the Circle Filologico Milanese in Milan. In addition to contributing music to films such as The Great Debaters starring and directed by Denzel Washington, he just finished scoring his first Hollywood feature: The Stage 6™ (a division of Sony Pictures) 3-D horror film, The Dark Country. Last month, ELEW was invited to the White House, where he performed solo on the piano for an audience that included President Barack Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, and an assembly of our nation’s political, artistic and cultural leaders.

chelsea:artsfestival 2009

“…in Chelsea, for Chelsea, celebrating Chelsea…”

Saturday 13th- Wednesday 24th June 2009

The all new chelsea:artsfestival aims to take its audience right through the ever-fascinating Chelsea village with events taking place in venues ranging from the prestigious Cadogan Hall and the historic Royal Hospital to smaller, quirkier venues such as the London Sketch Club; the Chelsea Arts Club; the Chelsea Theatre and Lots Road’s 606 Club.

Headline act, rock legend Rick Wakeman, raises the curtain on the new chelsea:artsfestival at Cadogan Hall with a 60th birthday celebration that includes the premiere of his new work entitled ‘P ‘n O’. Featuring a cast of well over 100 that includes full orchestra and the English Chamber Choir conducted by Guy Protheroe, music will include parts of his best-known works such as ‘The Six Wives of Henry VIII’ and ‘Journey to the Centre of the Earth’.

Continuing its mission to support new works, the festival also welcomes back novelist Vikram Seth and composer Alec Roth. ‘Seven Elements’ is the fourth and final part of their critically acclaimed series of brand-new works for Chelsea, ‘Confluences’, featuring James Gilchrist (tenor), Philippe Honoré (violin) and Rustem Hayroudinoff (piano). The new work is matched with ‘elemental’ songs by Schubert.

With other key Festival artists including leading violinist Tasmin Little; news-reader and self-confessed Beethoven fanatic, John Suchet; comedienne Jan Ravens; jazz vocalist Clare Teal; soul diva Mica Paris plus chamber music from a stable of exciting, young artists, chelsea:artsfestival brings together the very best of the arts in Chelsea.

There’s also an exciting family programme with poet Roger McGough; ‘The Little Mermaid’ - a magical play with music; cartoon workshops with Tim Quinn; jazz workshops for children with The Dixie Ticklers and the ever popular Hat Show not to mention free community events such as the annual cricket match. In addition, local artists throw open their studios and there will be an open art exhibition staged by the Chelsea Art Society, now celebrating its 62nd year.

In a great Festival finale concert, world renowned baritone Sir Willard White celebrates the music of the great Paul Robeson in a programme to include spirituals, British folk songs and classic early jazz songs.
Festival Director Stewart Collins commented: “The emergence of the all-new chelsea:artsfestival is hopefully a ray of light in these difficult times. It is never more important than at times of trial and crisis to sit back and appreciate that there are some things you can’t put a value on – like fine performance and great art and entertainment. Exactly this we have planned for our June event and hope you will enjoy the eclectic mix of performances lined up for you”.

Sir Willard White - Robeson Re -Explored

Wednesday 24 June 7.30pm
Cadogan Hall, Sloane Terrace

The world renowned baritone in a great festival finale concert. Sir Willard White explores more of the repertoire and life story of this important icon of the last century. Paul Robeson epitomised the energy and integrity of the major figures who raised awareness of equality and human rights in the mid-twentieth century. The story of his example is moving and highly relevant to today’s world. Sir Willard’s second exploration of the great man is backed by musical director and pianist Neal Thornton who leads a group of outstanding accompanying musicians, including Guy Barker on trumpet and the Pavão String Quartet, to bring orchestral textures to tailor-made arrangements of more popular songs from the Paul Robeson songbook. The programme includes Negro spirituals, British folk songs, and classic early jazz songs. The concert concludes with his rendition of Ol’ Man River. Sir Willard White takes on the mantle of the legendary Paul Robeson with the quality of a master craftsman.

Tickets priced at £32, £27, £20 and £10 are available by calling the Box Office on 0845 890 2435 or online via the chelsea:artsfestivalwebsite; www.chelseaartsfestival.org

Voted ‘Jazz Vocalist of the Year’ three years running and blessed with a stunning voice, the ability to write songs that promise to be classics and a wonderful warm humour, Clare is a rare commodity, and in every way the major star.

“Wonderful. Worth raving about.” - Sir Michael Parkinson

The Boisdale Blue Rhythm Band will join BBC Jazz Vocalist of the Year, Clare Teal at the Cadogan Hall on Thursday 18th June to pay tribute to the greats - Fats Waller, Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington. Muchas gracias

Coveted Jazz Album Finally Available to Jo Belle Fans

Jazz icons such as Mark Murphy, Ira Sullivan, and Von Freeman know who she is. The Chicago Jazz Institute says “She sounds great in any and every musical situation, has the necessary charm, soul, perfect intonation and can sell the lyrics of the song.” Her CD, “Sessions… with Friends” is so sought after, that it regularly sells for between $80 and $100 in New York City’s West Village second hand music stores. Yet, many people are probably unfamiliar with Jo Belle. Her albums have never been easily purchased. Until now.

On April 27th, 2009, “Sessions… with Friends” will be available for purchase on iTunes, Amazon.com, Real Rhapsody, Napster, eMusic, and by several other on-line distributors.

The album features Jo Belle with some of her favorite musicians including Howard Levy, Alejo Poveda, Ira Sullivan, Joe Lano, Art Davis, Ron Perillo, Eddie Johnson, Vincent Falcone, Tommy Check, Kelly Sill, Joel Spencer, Fareed Haque, Eric Hochberg, Edward Petersen, Dave Carey, Ray Kilday, Ron Zito, and Brad Williams.

Songs include: Waters Of March, E-Baba-Leba, Drunk In San Francisco, Out Of This World, The Shining Sea, Better Than Anything, Accustomed To Your Face, Stolen Moments, When I Look In Your Eyes, Nothin’ Like You, I’m Old Fashioned, and Playin’ It Cool.

Born into a show business family, Jo Belle has always been around music. Her father was The Great Yonely, International Musical Humorist, and her mother Sarah, was a singer. Jo Belle got into her first band in 7th grade and sang through high school and college in every style. Jo Belle first acheived recognition in Chicago as a leader of her own groups as well as working with every notable Jazz Musician on the scene.

Andrea - Photograph

April 15th, 2009

Hello all!

And welcome to the spring edition of my email updates. Flowers are blooming, lambs are gambling (it’s a little-known problem), and I have given birth to twins:

Debut album ‘Photograph’ - out now
It’s finally arrived - and is available to buy through my website in all its smoochy glory. ‘Photograph’ makes the perfect birthday/late Easter/early Christmas/very late Millennium/very early celebratory London Olympics gift. Or why not treat yourself? Because you’re worth it, you know. Jennifer Aniston said so, so it must be true. We all need music in these credit-crunch times. Especially relaxing smoochy bossa nova-slash-jazz music sung by female vocalists, don’t you find?

New website - out now
It’s black! And white! With a hint of turquoise! It’s my not-so-much-’new’-as-’completely-new-look’ website and it’s here at www.andreamann.com. That’s right: just where it always was. Only this time it’s got a new look, new tracks (from aforementioned album), new photos, new links to nonsense I’ve written and a new blog. A proper blog! Where you can abuse me with comments. As long as I approve them first.

I think that’s more than enough for now - but in the meantime: a) put Wednesday 6 May in your diary for my London album launch gig at The Spice Of Life (if you live in London, that is. I don’t expect you to come if you live in, say, Wales). More details on that to follow…; and b) you can now become my ‘Fan’ on my ‘Page’ on ‘Facebook’. Here. Oh yes, I’m down with The Kids. Although not so down that I Tweet.

Thanks everyone! love, Andrea xx

Andrea Concerts

March 12th, 2009

Hello all!

Got some important gig news. Hence the Subject. Specifically: important gig news about my March 30 showcase, and Sheffield and Oxford album launches.

The Hummingbirds launch - Monday 30 March, London
The most important gig news here is, erm, that I’m afraid The Hummingbirds are no more. The Hummingbirds have ceased to be. We are ex-Hummingbirds. Now, this news makes me terrifically sad, and without wishing to go into details, all I can tell you (until I’m drunk on the night) is that time was called on the project, and not by me. Ah well :-(. So: I am terribly sorry to all of you who were as excited as I was about our launch on the world at the Occasion Occasion artists’ showcase on March 30 at Piano Kensington. BUT fear not! Because the gig is still very much on, and I will still be performing a set, as will the brilliant Karen Lane - and it will be a rare chance to catch her in an intimate gig before she goes on to launch her new album at Pizza Express Dean Street. So, please do still come down for a fab night of live jazz. Doors are 6.30pm, music kicks off at 7pm, and you can book tickets (£7) in advance by calling 02087280879 or emailing contact@occasionoccasion.com. Venue details here: http://www.pianokensington.com. Hummingwho?

Sheffield album launch - Monday 6 April
Ah, Sheffield: city of steel, Pulp and other materials. Also my alma mater and my sister’s hometown, and therefore the city I’ve most wanted to bring my music to. Well, apart from Wolverhampton. I’m going to be doing an album launch gig at the lovely venue Bar Abbey (downstairs at The Abbeydale Picture House), 387 Abbeydale Road, S7 1FS, with the fantastic Martin Pickett on piano, Paul Jefferies on bass and Charlie Stratford on drums.  Doors are 7.30pm, show starts at 8.30pm, and tickets are a credit-crunchworthy £3 on the door (tel 01142 580414 for more details).  It will be a great night - and if you don’t believe me, I refer you to the publicity material from the venue, which is advertising it as an ‘album launch party’. That’s right: party. Not just a gig. A party. Hurrah!

Oxford Jazz Festival gig - Friday 10 April
I’ll be launching my album with a performance at the Oxford Jazz Festival on Good Friday, which will henceforth be referred to across the land as Great Friday. I’ll be performing with the brilliant core players on the album - Martin Pickett on piano, Paul Jefferies on bass, Ben Twyford on drums, and Nigel Price on guitar - and the show is at 5.30pm at the Jacqueline Du Pre Music Building. Tickets are £12.50 and all booking, venue and other details can be found on the Oxford Jazz Festival website: http://www.oxfordjazzfestival.com/. Do check out all the other artists who are performing (I mean: check them out on the website, at least. I don’t expect you to go to every gig) because it really is a fantastic line-up for what is the very first festival of its kind in Oxford.

And finally: important album news
What with all this talk above of launching the new album, I know what you’re thinking: when can we actually get the sodding thing, Andrea? Well, Photograph (for that is its name) is being pressed as we speak, and will be available in a few weeks. So fear not: I will soon be contacting you all again - plus anyone I’ve ever bumped into in the street  - to let you know how you can get your copy :-). My website will be relaunched to coincide with this, I’ll be setting up a Facebook fan page, and I’m also currently investigating how to get in onto iTunes/Amazon/other 21st century shopping emporia. In the meantime, I shall tease you with a picture of the cover. Hope you like. And if not: don’t tell me, because it’s too late, it’s gone to press.

lots of love to you all (even the people I just bumped into in the street) and thanks for your continued support,

Andrea xx
